Thank you Jason Fried for describing this and finally calling it out as wrong, all my life I had a strong suspicion that a interruption based workday is wrong, after hearing you, all doubt has been removed. I had to put up with people who thought interruptions make you work faster. I'm showing this to everybody I know. Keep up the good insights.

I consider the internet as a *huge* interruption. I find that when I code on an airplane during a trip, I get *way* more done on the airplane when it's not even possible to get online. I know that there's no way to check IM or email or my feed reader, so I can concentrate on my code. To me, there should be a way to turn off all internet distractions like those while keeping the internet open for doing work-related research.

Yea, I use rescuetime, but it just tells me that I'm not productive. It doesn't really force me to be offline, or perhaps I'm not using it right. :(

I couldn't agree more, but unfortunately I don't have the luxury to change things to make this problem go away for me. But I definitely agree with this.
